Arnold I do not have the option "Show thumbnails instead of icons" in Performance Option or Folder Options. Type windows explorer in the search box and hit the Enter key. VERY VERY MUCH ! Your advise fixed the problem.
This isn't a permanent fix, but it does solve the problem on a temporary basis. Do you have any suggestions - the appropriate box is not checked. The same solution noted here works though I wonder if it's a bug and what exactly triggers it. I couldn't get Windows Mobile Device Manager to work.
