I first noticed it watching streaming videos and podcasts. When I opened it none of my tabs would load, they could not access the sites. I decided to try again and clean it yesterday.

Try doing a system restore. this probably isn't the right answer, but it's definitely cheaper and faster than swapping out hardware (unless you have extras on hand, in which case lucky you!). I guess not seeing it in front of you or being able to connect with my PC I would think it might be a challenge. A flaky hard drive would probably be dead after a few years. I was saying when your system runs low on memory and it needs to use the Page file system, It is extremely slow. I put the case back on and we'll see if the temps stay low and if that helps prevent future freeze ups.
